This is not limited to livestock and poultry, in fact simple biosecurity measures can protect your pet bird, dog or other family pet from pests and disease. As some animal diseases are zoonotic — or affect humans — biosecurity can also protect you.
Susies Animal Ark Transport follows strict screening and quarantine procedures in order to maintain the highest standard in cleanliness and sanitation.
POULTRY - Respiratory Disease
One of the most common veterinary complaints of backyard chickens is snicking, sneezing and coughing. Symptoms of typical poultry respiratory problems include: Runny / watery eyes, swollen sinusses, wheezing, sneezing, gurgling / rattling, and difficulty breathing. . Respiratory disease often presents itself with one or more birds sneezing / snicking. These birds can have a runny nose and foamy running eyes. The bird will also have an unpleasant smell around its beak and nasal passages. "A sick chook stinks". In severe cases these birds can have swollen sinuses (presents as swelling around the eyes), stop eating and in extreme cases die. In most cases, Respiratory Diseases are highly contagious.
There a number predisposing factors for respiratory disease in chickens: as with any animal stress can cause an underlying disease to show itself. This stress could be extremes of temperature and humidity, high stocking density, being transported, being taken to a poultry show and new animals being introduced to an existing/established flock.
If your bird does develop any of these signs it is worth consulting your vet as antibiotic treatment is usually advised. Birds suffering with respiratory disease should always be isolated from the other healthy birds, given lots of TLC and be given veterinary attention where necessary.
Any bird exhibiting signs of Respiratory Disease will not be permitted onto Susies Animal Ark Transports Vehicle. Each bird is checked for Respiratory Disease prior to boarding.
